JIT Series: Expanding the Repertoire of Korean Percussion

The JIT series is a collaborative project by composer MinJoon CHOI and percussionist JeongHyun HWANG, who have studied and worked together since their early years in traditional Korean music. Recognizing the scarcity of contemporary works that truly understand and feature Korean percussion instruments, they launched JIT in 2023 to explore new techniques, reinterpret rhythmic structures, and expand the expressive potential of these instruments.

Each JIT composition embodies the concept of “twisting conventions,” offering novel performance techniques, pitch interpretations for non-melodic instruments, and expanded roles for accompaniment. Rather than simply integrating Western rhythmic elements, the series focuses on subtle transformations within existing traditions to create entirely new musical experiences.

The name JIT derives from the Korean word jit, meaning a purposeful yet momentary gesture, and from “jitter,” a term in electronic signal processing that denotes slight variations leading to significant changes—mirroring the project’s artistic approach. Additionally, jit. is a command in Max software for audiovisual visualization, symbolizing the close collaboration between composer and performer in this multimedia-inspired series.

JIT compositions are developed through deep collaboration, with the percussionist teaching the composer traditional techniques while the composer proposes new performance methods. This intensive process ensures a profound understanding of the instruments and their musical context. As a result, the works challenge and inspire performers, serving as both concert pieces and etudes.

The upcoming jit. concert will feature all three existing JIT pieces, a newly premiered JIT IV, and two additional works, totaling six compositions. More than a conventional solo recital, the performance unfolds as a continuous narrative, where small gestures create vast sonic ripples. Interwoven with short documentary interviews, the concert offers a reflection on the evolution of the JIT series, inviting audiences to engage with the artistic journey of two musicians dedicated to redefining Korean percussion.

JIT 시리즈: 국악 타악 레퍼토리의 확장

JIT 시리즈는 작곡가 최민준과 타악 연주자 황정현의 협업 프로젝트로, 두 사람은 전통음악을 함께 공부하며 어린 시절부터 긴 인연을 이어왔다. 이들은 국악 타악기가 포함된 현대 작품은 많지만, 이를 깊이 이해하고 중심적으로 활용하는 작품은 드물다는 점에 문제의식을 느꼈다. 이에 2023년부터 JIT 시리즈를 시작하여, 새로운 연주 기법 탐구, 장단의 재해석, 반주의 기능 확장 등 국악 타악기의 표현 가능성을 넓히는 작업을 이어가고 있다.

각 JIT 작품은 기존 전통의 틀을 ‘비트는’(twisting conventions) 방식을 중심으로 한다. 서양 음악 어법을 단순히 차용하는 것이 아니라, 전통 속에서 작은 변화를 가미함으로써 완전히 새로운 음악을 창출하는 것이 핵심이다.

연작의 제목인 JIT는 ‘짓’이라는 한국어 단어에서 비롯되었으며, 몸짓·손짓과 같이 짧지만 목적을 가진 움직임이 국악 타악기의 본질을 꿰뚫는다고 보았다. 또한, ‘Jitter’라는 전자 신호 처리 용어에서 영감을 받아, 작은 변동이 큰 변화로 이어지는 개념을 차용했다. 더불어 Max 소프트웨어의 jit. 오브젝트(명령어)에서 착안해, 시리즈가 오디오-비주얼적 요소를 포함한 창작 과정 속에서 탄생했다는 점을 드러낸다.

JIT 시리즈는 연주자와 작곡가의 긴밀한 협업을 기반으로 한다. 황정현이 타악기의 전통적 연주법을 전수하면, 최민준이 이를 바탕으로 새로운 연주법과 음악적 아이디어를 제시한다. 이러한 과정 속에서 작품은 지속적으로 수정·보완되며, 단순한 연주곡을 넘어 연주자에게 도전적인 에튀드(연습곡)로서의 가치를 갖는다.

다가오는 jit. 공연에서는 지금까지 발표된 3개의 JIT 작품과 신작 JIT IV, 그리고 새롭게 작곡될 두 작품을 포함한 총 6개의 작품이 연주될 예정이다. 단순히 곡을 나열하는 독주회 형식이 아니라, 작은 움직임이 거대한 반향을 일으키는 서사가 무대를 통해 펼쳐진다. 또한, 각 작품의 탄생 배경을 담은 다큐멘터리 인터뷰가 연주 사이사이에 삽입되어, JIT 시리즈가 걸어온 과정과 고민을 관객과 함께 나누는 공연으로 기획되었다.
