MinJoon CHOI’s composition recital, Sinawi Series, is a trilogy consisting of “TOWARD SINAWI – Towards Sinawi,” “ACCANTO SINAWI – Beside Sinawi,” and “META SINAWI – Beyond Sinawi.” Each concert features a titular work that encapsulates the composer’s perspective and reflections on Korean traditional music, redefined through the lens of sinawi. These compositions serve as intuitive expressions of CHOI’s engagement with tradition. With the completion of the second recital, only the final performance, “META SINAWI – Beyond Sinawi,” remains.

Background & Concept

As a composer studying Korean traditional music composition, MinJoon CHOI has long contemplated the meaning of gugak (Korean traditional music) for a gugak composer. He often felt that traditional music was used merely as a material resource for composing new works, rather than being engaged with on a deeper level. As a composer who deeply appreciates gugak, CHOI sought an alternative approach.

His exploration of this idea dates back to his early teenage years when he first started learning gugak. He realized that the role of a gugak composer should not be limited to simply using Korean traditional instruments as tools (gugak as an instrument). Rather, it should extend to the ability to compose music that genuinely embodies the essence of gugak.

CHOI found great resonance with the “New Sinawi Declaration” announced by the Gyeonggi Sinawi Orchestra and its artistic director, Won Il, in April 2020. The declaration conceptualized the free and improvisatory nature of traditional Korean performance practices as sinawi-hagi (literally, “doing sinawi”)—a framework for reinterpreting and expanding the spiritual and ritualistic aspects of traditional performance through various genres and modern technologies. Inspired by this movement, CHOI began to question what role a composer could play within this evolving discourse. Furthermore, he considered how he could navigate the collapsing boundaries between Western contemporary music composition and Korean traditional music composition, embracing both perspectives simultaneously.

Through these inquiries, CHOI moved beyond the conventional approach of merely incorporating elements of tradition into new compositions. Instead, he sought to compose sinawi music—music that is fundamentally rooted in the aesthetic and functional principles of traditional Korean music. Rather than viewing today’s traditional music as a static relic of the past, he imagines what it might have been before it was defined as “traditional” and envisions its natural evolution.

Thus, Sinawi Series is not just a platform for premiering new works, as in a typical composition recital. It is a profound study and exploration of the core essence of Korean traditional music—beyond its surface-level characteristics or external packaging. Moreover, this series represents CHOI’s journey beyond the role of a gugak composer, moving toward becoming a sinawi composer, and ultimately, a sinawi artist. Each recital is a step in this transformative process.

최민준 작곡발표회 ‘시나위 시리즈는 총 3개의 연작 공연으로, “TOWARD SINAWI – 시나위 향해서”, “ACCANTO SINAWI – 시나위 곁에서”, “META SINAWI – 시나위 너머”로 구성되어 있다. 각 공연은 공연의 제목과 동명인 작품을 포함하며, 작품에는 시나위로 재정의된 국악 혹은 전통음악을 바라보고 대하는 작곡가 최민준의 시선과 사유를 직관적으로 표현하는 메시지들이 담긴다. 현재는 마지막 발표회인 “META SINAWI – 시나위 너머”만을 남겨두고 있다.

기획 배경

  작곡가 최민준은 국악작곡을 공부하며, ‘국악’이 ‘국악작곡가’에게 있어서 어떠한 의미를 지니는지에 대하여 깊은 고민을 이어왔다. 대부분의 경우 단순히 음악을 만들기 위하여 ‘재료적으로’ 전통음악을 사용해 왔다고 느꼈고, 이것은 전통음악을 사랑하는 국악작곡가로서 지향해야 할 길은 아니라고 생각했다. .

  이러한 의문은 국악을 배우기 시작한 중학생 시절 때 시작되었으며, ‘국악기’를 사용한 음악이 아닌(국악의 도구적 활용), ‘국악’을 작곡할 수 있는 능력을 갖추는 것이 국악작곡가의 당위라고 느꼈다. 

  2020년 4월 경기시나위오케스트라와 예술감독 원일의 ‘新, 시나위 선언’에 깊이 공감한다. 한국 전통음악에서, 연주자 중심의 자유로운 창작행위를 ‘시나위-하기’로 개념화하고 공연예술이 지닌 영적 제의성과 전통의례를 다양한 장르 혹은 테크놀로지와 융합하고자 하는 이 하나의 조류에서 작곡가로써 어떤 역할을 할 수 있는지에 대해 고민했다. 또한 서양음악작곡가와 국악작곡가의 벽이 점점 허물어지는 이 과도기적 시기에 두 개의 포지션을 모두 갖춘 사람으로써의 역할에 대한 고민도 함께 이어졌다.

  이러한 생각들은 기존 창작국악의 ‘전통의 표면적 활용’을 이라는 장르에서 벗어나 전통음악적 미학과 작동 방식을 그 근간에 두고 작곡하는 ‘시나위’음악을 작곡하고자 하는 계기가 되었다. 지금의 전통음악이 ‘전통’음악이 아니었을 때를 상상하며, 그 연장선상의 음악들을 꿈꾼다. 

때문에 최민준의 작곡발표회 ‘시나위 시리즈’는 여타 작곡가들의 작곡발표회와 같이 새로운 신작을 공개하는 연주회의 성격을 갖고 있되, 한국 전통음악의 본질과 고유성, 포장지와 같은 껍데기가 아닌 그 정수를 공유하는 음악을 탐구하기 위한 깊은 Study로 정의될 수 있다. 더 나아가 국악작곡가로부터의 탈피와 동시에 시나위작곡가, 그리고 시나위예술가로서의 삶을 살아가기 위한 과정으로 작품발표회를 개최한다.
